The very first step of the application of six sigma is defining the problem along with explaining the complete scope of the project to the team working on it. The regular practice involves inspection of all the problems and errors from the team’s perspective, but Six Sigma is not in favor of it. It is more advisable to study the product and its shortcomings from the customer perspective.
Gauge the current performance of the system. Since Six Sigma is a combination of data-driven decisions, and to improve processes, it asks for the collection of all sort of data along with its real sources about the current process to improve it.
Once all the data is collected and segregated, it is time to analyze complete performance to isolate the problems and remove them. The test hypothesis is created to find out the root causes of those problems using both statistical and qualitative tools.
The process is then improved by selecting the most feasible solution for the problem. Several improvement initiatives are taken to eradicate possible root causes of similar nature in the future. This is why lean manufacturing also improves the sustainability of the production systems.
The last step includes controlling the important variables of the process to make sure the product meets all the needs of the customer. The process should serve some standard procedures to deal with a similar sot of problems appearing in the future.
